onPause writes:
When Ubisoft released Far Cry 3 late last year, players were unleashed onto lush island and jungle environments filled with open world exploration, hunting and a story filled with insanity. Fast forward a few months and Ubisoft Montreal is bringing us a very different Far Cry experience with the standalone title Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon which can be downloaded on Xbox 360, PS3 or PC for 15 Dollars.

Push Square: "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is unashamedly stupid, and it's all the better for it. The standalone download takes the core ideas from Ubisoft's relatively recent tropical thriller, and reassembles them in the form of a nostalgic love-in that's packed with sly references and silly jokes. Its campaign may be short, but the title never overstays its welcome as a result. If you're looking for a laugh, then search no further."

Ubisoft Montreal has created one of the most fully realized and perfectly represented love-letters to the 1980s. With a perfect blend between visuals, audio, and writing, Blood Dragon is a brilliant parody and an awesome action game. It is well worth the low asking price, and can easily stand on its own without the Far Cry brand.

In retrospect, the 1980s were perhaps humanitys most colourful decade. That is, at least in terms of modern time. Filled to the brim with colour, experimentation, cheesy movies and strange musical styles, those years will never be forgotten, and for good reason. However, as a race, weve experienced an incredible amount of progression since that time so much so that its impossible to even list, or comprehend all of the advancements that have been made. Of course, a lot of that has to do with technology, which is always improving at an impressive, yet almost overwhelming pace. Gadgets and gizmos have become an integral and beneficial part of our everyday lives in todays modern world, and its always interesting to look back on where we came from.

Blood Dragon is a high-octane, grimy neon view of the future, as seen through the lens of a 1980s action movie project and its brilliant. It ditches a lot of the learning curve from Far Cry 3 and strips out some of the systems but, in the end, that doesnt really matter. For a downloadable title thats significantly more than just an expansion (and doesnt require Far Cry 3 to play) this is a lot of content and a wonderful idea, well presented.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a good game thats pretending to be bad. The irony is that pretending to be bad is about the only thing it doesnt succeed at. Far from pointing out the deficiencies of other shooters, it underlines what we already know about them: Even the dumbest story in the world doesnt matter once the shooting starts.

Scott from The Controller Online writes: "What we thought was simply one of the more awesome April Fools day jokes, coming from video game companies, soon became all too real as screenshots of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon leaked out. We then found out that it wouldnt be a DLC add-on for Far Cry 3, instead it would be a standalone downloadable game. Also, if you havent had a chance to see it yet, Blood Dragon is one of the most ridiculous things youll ever see and thats a good thing. Get ready to travel into the future, all the way to the year 2007."

GR-UK writes: "In the grand scheme of things Blood Dragon is a decent slice of DLC. It's very funny, and worth picking up for the story and its deeply silly sense of humour. It takes much of what made the original so entertaining and elaborates on it, but it goes so far left-field that it wanders away from the mainstream and becomes a more niche offering as a result.
"The impact of the combat and the surrounding environment is lessened by design choices made along the way, however there's still plenty to enjoy, and whilst it's not the longest campaign, if you're a child of the 80s and like a good tongue-in-cheek killfest, it's well worth the download."
